Honeymoon Essentials: What to See and Do in Puerto Vallarta

There’s much more than the spring break scene in Puerto Vallarta. This Pacific coast resort destination also has a sophisticated side, with a thriving local art community, beautifully preserved Colonial architecture, and a spectacular mountain views.

What to See and Where to Stay

If a relaxing retreat is what you’re after, consider the Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Spa (888-859-9439). Their honeymoon suites boast beautiful ocean views (and jacuzzis!). Want an ultra-romantic experience? Book one of the seven uniquely decorated rooms at the Quinta Maria Cortez bed-and-breakfast (888-640-8100). You can sun in the cove during the day and watch the sunset from the rooftop terrace in the evening.

The beaches are the main attraction in Puetro Vallarta. But when you’ve had your fill of sunbathing, there’s still plenty to do. Head into Viejo Vallarta to check out the historic buildings as well as browse the numerous galleries and boutiques for local art, handcrafted jewelry, and more . For a bit of nature, head to Playa Anclote and hire a boat to go to the Marietas Islands, home to numerous species of birds, tropical fish, and (in the winter months) humpback whales.

The Best Time to Go

December through April is generally the high season for tourists; in the summer, particularly July and August, you may also find more locals on vacation and slightly more pricey accommodations. The Christmas and Easter holidays tend to see hotels get crowded (and expensive). Likewise, you’re wise to skip March and April to avoid the spring break college crowds who annually descend on Puerto Vallarta.

Though it’s the busy season, winter in the Vallarta region is near perfect -- dry and balmy, and not too cold at night. Plus, the ocean’s swimmable year-round. May through October is the rainy season, but it rarely rains for long, so you’re unlikely to lose a day to the weather except in September, the wettest month of the year.

The Best Ways to Save

When you’re pricing accommodations, be sure to inquire as to what the rates include. Because Puerto Vallarta is such a popular tourist town, many resorts are all-inclusive or include meals, gratuity, or other costs. Mexico has a 15 percent value added tax, so when you’re looking at prices, find out whether this is included since it can make a substantial difference.

Skip the airport taxi services -- these are federally licensed cabs that solely shuttle passengers to and from the airport. If you’re willing to do a little walking, you can head over the highway overpass to pick up a yellow cab for one-third the cost. Another thing to be aware of: Cab drivers will often suggest restaurants, hotels, or nightlife, but stick to your original plans. The drivers are usually just on commission from these establishments, so a recommendation doesn’t mean you’re really getting a true insider tip.

Food’s another easy way to save. While the upscale resort restaurants are tempting, you’ll also find plenty of places that are favorites with the locals. You can fill up for less than $10 (US) on the buffets at El Planeta Vegetariano (011-52-322-222-3073). You can also taste the Spanish influence at a profusion of tapas restaurants: The tiny La Esquina de los Caprichos (011-52-322-222-0911) is both reasonably priced and delicious.
