Floral Budget: Who Pays

Although traditionally the bride's family pays for all flowers except for wedding party flowers, which are covered by the groom's side, modern couples and families often come to their own arrangements. No matter who pays for what, here's the one rule we urge you to follow: Always consider what everyone can afford. After all, the most important part of setting a budget is to be gracious and sensitive to everyone involved. If your in-laws don't have a daughter, it may be their pleasure to splurge on their son's wedding.  When broaching the subject of wedding day budget, keep in mind the following tips:

  • If you are planning to ask the groom's family to contribute, it's better to set your overall budget and ask once you know how much money you will need.
  • After you figure out your budget, we suggest you ask your parents what they may want to contribute. You don't want your parents to sacrifice their retirement, but you do want them to feel included... so you're walking a fine line.
  • Don't forget that dad -- God bless him -- may not have a clue as to what flowers cost today. It may be an initial shock for him to hear the price, but he'll get over it once he's proudly walking you down the aisle!

Hot Tip:If you crave drama for your bouquet, don't think you have to break the bank. Instead of wowing your guests with your bouquet's size, consider carrying a smaller arrangement in a striking color. Scarlet and hot pink always pack a punch, and there are plenty of inexpensive blooms that come in those colors.
