How far should you negotiate with vendors before you back down?

A

When dealing with vendors, it’s important to develop a partnership based on trust and good faith, treating them as respected collaborators, not simply as hired help. Communication is the key to this process. For example, be up front with the caterer from the start about the amount of money you’re able to spend. If you’re firm about your budget, then it’s the caterer’s job to work within that figure. Have a realistic plan, and speak up if you have concerns. Let your vendors know what you’re able to do, listen respectfully to their offers, and keep discussing options until you’re both satisfied -- or not. You’ll know whether to back down or agree to move on.
