Cake Basics

How to Hire a Cake Designer: Must-Knows

Photo: Chung Li Photography

1. Interview, sample and request quotes from at least two (but no more than three) cake designers. Too many sweet choices can leave even the savviest of brides a little woozy.

2. Do you like the cake designer's portfolio? Do they have clever ideas? Does their work reflect the different styles and personalities of their clients? Remember, your cake can be a creative way to express who you are, and a cake designer who takes cues off their client's personal style is the best bet, any way you slice it.

3. Do the cakes taste good? Do you like the selection of flavors and fillings the designer offers? Will they bake different flavors for different tiers?

4. Do you like the cake designer? Did they spend enough time with you, offer you samples and listen to your ideas?

5. Does your cake designer have creative ideas that appeal to your sensibility, taking into account taste, style and budget?

6. Does your designer come highly recommended? Can they supply references? It'll be worth it to get feedback from brides who have used them.

7. Will your cake designer personally deliver the cake on the day of your wedding? Will they stick around to arrange the cake table or to make emergency frosting or decoration repairs? How will the cake be packaged for transport? How will it be handed off to your caterer? Make sure your cake designer will commit to you before you commit your checkbook.

8. Does your cake designer own interesting accessories you can use, like an antique cake stand or eye-catching pedestal, or will you be billed extra for renting specialty items?

9. Will your designer order, rent or coordinate special items like cake toppers, fountains, cake cutters and cake stands? If need be, will they coordinate delivery with your florist and caterer?

10. Will your cake designer prepare and wrap the top layer of your wedding cake so you can preserve it until your first anniversary? Even better, will they sweeten the deal with a complimentary cake baked just for you when your first anniversary rolls around?

11. Make sure the cake designer's WRITTEN proposal to you reflects all the items and services you've discussed.
