What are different ways to decorate a wedding cake?

A

No matter which type of wedding cake you choose (modern or traditional, ornate or simple) it will likely feature carefully crafted decorations or designs. There a few ways the wedding cake baker will do this. Sugar paste is commonly used as a wedding cake decoration, though fruit, flowers, fondant and marzipan creations are also very popular techniques. Here are a few other great wedding cake decor alternatives to consider:

  • Sewing-inspired elements, such as fondant buttons on a white-on-white cake
  • Unfussy, simple blooms; today's most fashionable fresh flowers used in wedding cake decor include orchids, calla lilies, tulips, and gardenias
  • The white, three-tiered, round wedding cake has remained a classic wedding cake choice
  • Fresh berries, sugared fruits, and thick bands of sugar paste flowers are appearing between cake layers
  • Square, octagonal, and hexagonal confections are gaining popularity, especially at more modern and laid-back weddings
