What's the Correct Way to Do the Cake Cutting?

A

The ceremonial cutting of the wedding cake is one of the classic elements of the wedding reception. In addition to providing a great photo opportunity, it's symbolic as the first task the newlyweds execute together.

If you have a large or elaborate cake, place it on its own round, skirted table. The cake should be cut just before dessert, preceded by an announcement by the master of ceremonies. For an afternoon tea or cocktail reception, serve the cake after the receiving line and once guests have their drinks.

As you approach the cake, the groom places his right hand over the bride’s, and they cut the first slice together from the bottom tier. Slide the slice onto the server, place it on a plate, and use the knife to cut the slice into two small pieces. The groom feeds the bride her first bite and the bride then feeds him. This tradition signifies your commitment to provide for one another. As a thoughtful gesture, the bride may then offer a piece of cake to her new in-laws, and the groom should do the same.

Once the bride and groom have done their ceremonial cutting, the catering staff will take the wedding cake to the back to kitchen and serve the rest to the guests. For a first-anniversary treat, freeze the top tier or have your baker make you a fresh tier.
