The disco days arrived, and being a swinging single became the rage, making marriage -- and weddings -- less popular. Then in 1981, Lady Diana Spencer's fairy tale wedding to Prince Charles changed all that, and weddings became classically romantic again. The big wedding was back, and so was the big, white wedding gown. American brides tried to emulate Princess Di by wearing lavish, billowing gowns and by hosting the most opulent weddings their families could afford.
