Hosting a Wedding at Home

Celebrity wedding planner Yifat Oren offers advice on how to plan an at-home wedding.

With so many location options these days, finding the perfect wedding spot can be a little daunting. This is why planning an intimate wedding at a private residence can eliminate all of the drama and endless research. Whether it is the childhood home you grew up in, or the fabulous casa of a fancy friend, these special places can be set up to create an affair to remember. But, it's important to weigh these options before making decision:

Cut Through the Red-Tape

Is your home located in a gated community with noise restrictions or permit requirements? Make sure you are aware of these things well in advance before you begin planning so there aren't any surprises on your big day. (It would be unfortunate if the party was shut down before it began.) Also, be sure to take out liability insurance to cover yourself and your fiancé (and anyone else with financial involvement) for the days surrounding the wedding. Lastly, do be considerate of your neighbors. They may not all be invited to the wedding, but make sure to let them know well in advance what to expect.

How Many People Can the Property Accommodate?

Keep in mind you must include staff AND guests. Make sure you don't try to squeeze too many people into a small space, but also don't scatter a small group of guests in a vast area. When thinking about your final count, don't overlook restrooms! Do you have enough on site for both guests and staff, or do you need to bring more in? Are you on a septic system? This is a minor detail that can easily be forgotten but can cause quite a crisis if not attended to.

Always Keep the Comfort of Your Guests in Mind

Do you have a special place where you have always wanted to have the ceremony? You may love your location, but it might not love your guests back. Check to see what time the sun will be behind it before you choose the ceremony time – you don't want all of your guests squinting to see you. The sun could also affect your photographs, so check with your photographer if you have any questions. Also, make sure the ground is as flat as possible and hard enough so your guests' heels won't sink in.

The most important thing to remember is even though you are throwing a wedding at home, it should not be treated like just another casual backyard barbecue (unless, of course, it is!). Pay close attention to the details, and if necessary, call in an expert wedding or event planner. A great planner will know the answers to all the questions you didn't even know to ask.
