How Can You Make Your Wedding a One-of-a-Kind Event?

A

The most important step to making your wedding completely original is to ask yourself what aspect of your style or personality you want the event to reflect. Throw out all of your preconceived notions of what a wedding should look like and focus on the one thing that will make the biggest statement about the two of you.

Once you’ve narrowed down your ideas on what you want your wedding to reflect, imagine the perfect location. Again, don’t limit yourself to traditional venues for a wedding -- just about any place can become a wedding location if you have a legal officiant and two witnesses. Also, consider sites that can be transformed into your dream backdrop for a wedding through the use of props, decor, and even special effects. Commit yourself to making your wedding vision come true, as planning a wedding that is out-of-the-box may take extra time, effort, and money than the traditional nuptials would.

Finally, confirm that all the requirements for making your wedding legally binding are in place. You should also consider incorporating some timeless traditions into your one-of-a-kind wedding; classic vows and having your father give you away can fit seamlessly into all manner of unusual weddings.

Our favorite ideas?
The Movie Wedding Many couples have a favorite feature film that’s special to them, and recreating the setting may be easier than you think. Many film studios will actually accommodate weddings -- including props! -- on a soundstage, and since many movies are shot on location, you may be able to rent the actual site of a favorite scene. Fans of Westerns can hold their wedding at a ranch that was formerly owned by a studio, such as the Paramount Movie Ranch in Southern California.

The Wet Wedding Marrying underwater in scuba gear, while snorkeling, or even in a pool with dolphins is possible.

The Fairy-Tale Wedding Your fantasy wedding can take place in front of Cinderella’s castle at Disney World -- complete with horse-drawn carriage -- or in an actual castle. Oheka Castle in New York is one of our favorite locations.

The Adventurous Wedding Having your nuptials on the ski slopes is completely doable -- just make sure all your guests can handle skiing down the mountain to your reception site.
