Gold is measured on a karat scale, ranging from 14k to 24k. Pure gold is 24k and isn't a good option for a ring as it's too soft and will bend with daily wear. The most popular is 18k gold, which is more durable than pure gold because of the various alloys that are used to strengthen it. In comparison, platinum is so strong that it's difficult to size because of the high temperature required to change the metal’s shape.
