Everything You Need to Know About Fake Lashes

Looking for lovely long lashes on your wedding day? Let Stila celebrity makeup artist Sarah Lucero fill you in on what you should know about fake lashes and how to apply them!

As a makeup artist working in Hollywood, my kit has a nice stash of false lashes for all occasions -- I rarely apply makeup without them! My belief is even if you have great natural lashes, you can always add a touch of glamour with a few simple flares.

About Lashes:

Most lashes come in two versions -- a full strip or individual flares. Single flares create a natural-looking lash, while the full strip creates a more dramatic look. My favorite brand for single flares is Ardell. Their lashes come in all different lengths, so they work for any occasion. If you have shorter lashes, use the short-medium length flares; if you have long but sparse lashes, choose the long length. A great trick to make your eyes appear bigger is to apply a couple of flares in the center of the lashes and top off with a coat of mascara.

Shu Uemura and NYX are my two favorite “full strip” brands. The most important thing to remember when using strips is to make sure they fit your eye. The biggest mistake I see women make is when they apply the entire strip, and it actually makes their eyes look like they’re drooping down on the corners! Always hold the lash strip up to your eye to check the size. Often, it’ll need to be trimmed on the corners. This is something I always do. So don’t be afraid to trim.

To Apply:

1. Use a gentle glue (my favorite is Duo Eyelash Adhesive) and apply a small dab to the end of the lash or lash strip.

2. Let the glue dry a little bit into almost a tacky texture.

3. Gently place the lash as close to your lash line as possible.

I find the easiest way to apply lashes is to keep your chin up and look down while still looking into the mirror. Then simply lay the strip or the false flare right onto the lash line and let it dry slowly. (You may find it easier to use tweezers to apply individual flares. Just work slowly and carefully!)
