Manicure Tips

Manicure Tips

Your hands will probably never enjoy as much time in the spotlight as they will on your wedding day. Guests will want to see "the ring," and you'll want to show it off! Plan ahead now so your hands will look dazzling on the big day.

The Look

Wedding day nails should be clean and well-shaped. For many years the French manicure -- in which the tips of the nails are painted white and then the entire nail is painted with a soft, clear pink or eggshell color -- has enjoyed great popularity with brides. Still, classic hues of plum, red, wine, pink, coral and soft lilac are all excellent choices for your wedding day.

Awesome Acrylics

If you have trouble growing your own nails, an acrylic set may be the way to go. Keep in mind, acrylic tips must be "filled in" about every two weeks. Because acrylic often damages the nail underneath, it is only a quick fix, not a "real" solution to problem nails.
Having a full set applied will cost you between $40 to $65, with "fills" averaging about $20 every two weeks.

A Professional Manicure

If you decide to keep your nails natural, you may want to schedule a regular professional manicure for the months leading up to your wedding. Setting aside an hour once or twice a month to have your hands pampered makes for a welcome bridal break. And taking care of your nails regularly will help them grow strong and look nice.
If you don't already know a good manicurist, ask friends for referrals. And while on the hunt for a great salon, don't be afraid to inquire about health and safety practices. Tools should be disinfected after each use, and all manicurists should be licensed. If you have any doubts about a salon -- keep walking. And if you can't get all the answers you need, bring your own set of tools for the manicurist to use.

At-Home Manicure

1. If a home manicure is more your style, get in the habit now. Your home manicure should include these basic steps:
2. Remove any old polish on your nails by using cotton balls saturated with polish remover.
3. Use an emery board to shape your nails.
4. Soak your nails in warm, soapy water to soften your cuticles.
5. Gently push and trim your cuticles.
6. Wash your hands with soap and water.
7. Apply lotion and rub it in.
8. Wipe nails once more with polish remover to eliminate residual lotion.
9. Apply a base coat. Let dry.
10. Apply a thin coat of polish. Allow it to dry.
11. Apply a second thin coat of polish. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
12. If desired, apply a layer of top coat.
