Going to the beach? Don't forget your vitamins!
In a study conducted by dermatologists at the Technical University of Munich, researchers found that those who took high doses of vitamins C and E burned less easily than those in a control group who were not taking vitamins.
Twenty men and women were given 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 1,000 international units of vitamin E for eight days before being exposed to ultraviolet light.
The results were impressive: those who took vitamins withstood about 20% more ultraviolet light before showing symptoms of sunburn than those who took no vitamins. Researchers speculate that the vitamins may provide similar protection at lower levels. Vitamin E is also thought to reduce cancer.
When you consider that the vast majority of "skin flaws" -- including discoloring, wrinkling and other signs of premature aging -- not to mention skin cancer itself, is caused by unmitigated sun exposure, it becomes clear just how important it is to be smart about the sun... for the sake of your skin.
You already know that sun block is essential. But what we put in our bodies to protect us from sun damage is just as important as what we put on top of it. As always, consult your physician before initiating any new health regimen, but consider increasing your intake of vitamins C and E to protect your skin for possible sun damage. Protected skin is healthy skin, and healthy skin is simply beautiful.
